News and Information

U.S. Nationwide: 63,000 jobs were cut during the month of February, indicating that the economy is clearly in recession.  See the recent article below:

Employers Slash Jobs

Toledo, Ohio:  Recently, a local parent and activist voiced concerns about the condescending manner with which white teachers deal with black children.  In particular, a white teacher was seen boasting (at a public meeting) about washing the smelly and dirty clothes of her black students in the school's washer and dryer because their parents don't do it. Below are (1) the initial letter of Twila Page to Governor Ted Strickland on behalf of the African American Parent's Association, (2) the Toledo Journal article that followed, and (3) Ms. Page's response.

August 15, 2007 letter to Governor Strickland (.pdf)

March 4, 2008 Toledo Journal article (.htm)

March 8, 2008 response (.pdf)

We would like to point out the following:

  1. Most parents and families want the very best for their children.
  2. Economic hardship is a reality confronting many Black households and families.
  3. Some children come to school in clothes that are not clean.
  4. Discussing these issues in a condescending manner is insulting to the parents and families who struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet and it is wrong.
